#DarwinDays – Meet Maria Okwa, Beija Flor’s Founder & Creative Director

We're kicking off #DarwinDays by introducing the woman behind the flowers - Maria Okwa, the founder and creative force behind Beija Flor.

Maria’s journey in floristry spans continents and cultures. Originally from the UK, she has designed florals across Europe, Brazil, and Hayman Island, before finally settling in Darwin. Since launching Beija Flor in 2014 from a home studio, she has transformed itninto Darwin’s busiest florist.

🌿 What’s #DarwinDays About for You?
#DarwinDays is all about celebrating creativity, people, and the incredible local businesses that make Darwin unique. I love that it’s an opportunity to highlight the talent and passion behind what we do—not just at Beija Flor, but across the community.

Meet Maria

What’s Your Favourite Flower?

Hmm, that’s a tough one—it’s like picking a favourite child! Right now, I’d sayndahlias — big, showy, and just a little fickle!

Favourite Task at Beija Flor?

I love being on the shop floor, styling the fresh arrivals and chatting with customers. There's something so satisfying about filling the store with new blooms and colour.

What’s Your Best Advice as a Creative?

Never stop learning! My biggest inspiration comes from travel and nature—there’s always something new to discover. And persistence is key—floristry is a craft, and the real magic comes from years of practice and passion.

Inspired by Travel, Where’s Your Favourite Destination?

I love to sail, and one of my all-time favourites is Ilha Granden — a lush island off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. It’s perfect for exploring by boat, with rainforests, waterfalls, and hidden beaches waiting to be discovered.

People Always Ask Me…

''Why Darwin?'' That's a long story! But honestly, I love the laidback lifestyle here. It's a great place for my kids to grow up, and there's something really special about the creative energy and community in Darwin.

Where Do You Like to Go in Darwin?

Watching the sunset at Nightcliff Jetty with my family and eating pizza at Cucina Sotto Le Stelle—simple pleasures, but the best ones!
