The Benefits of Choosing Locally Grown Flowers
At Beija Flor, we’re passionate about supporting our local community and providing our customers with the freshest, most vibrant flowers possible. One of the ways we achieve this is by sourcing flowers from local growers. Here’s a look at the many benefits of choosing locally grown flowers.
Meet Our Local Growers
We proudly work with three main local growers who supply us with beautiful, fresh flowers year-round.
Henning and Jan have been growing tropical flowers in rural Darwin for over 30 years. Specialising in heliconias and gingers, they bring us fresh product twice a week. We take all the flowers they can grow and strive to have zero wastage. When we have a slow week, you might find daily specials with up to 20% off on our popular tropical bouquets, like the MINDIL and PARAP. This not only encourages our customers to shop local but also minimises wastage, offering great value as there are no air miles involved.

Our other growers, Mandy and Bob from Acacia Hills, provide us with seasonal flowers throughout the Darwin dry season. Their soft, pretty, and colourful blooms are often used in our weddings. For example, the cosmos bouquet for bride Annabelle was grown from seed especially for her stunning wedding. Local supply is crucial as these delicate flowers don’t travel well on planes.

Mandy and Bob also grow sunflowers, celosias, zinnias, and sculptural rosellas. Discover our Dry Season range. We've curated some cute gift boxes with local seasonal blooms alongside Darwin made Bumble Bean chocolates.

Environmental Benefits
Choosing locally grown flowers significantly reduces the carbon footprint. With less transportation involved, whether by air or road, there’s a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, locally grown flowers typically require fewer pesticides. For example, many imported varieties undergo a ‘devitalisation’ process where they are dipped in glyphosate. You can learn more about this process in the Australian Government's treatment guide.
Quality and Charm
Heliconias, which are not allowed to be imported to Australia, thrive superbly in Darwin’s climate. Our local tropical flowers boast unmatched quality. The dry season varieties, often more rustic in appearance, offer natural and charming variations due to being grown on a micro scale rather than in large production houses. These flowers, with their shorter stems, lend themselves beautifully to posy-style bouquets and centrepieces. The absence of heavy chemical treatments means you might find the occasional insect or chewed leaf, adding to their natural appeal.
Economic Impact
The cut flower industry in Darwin is small, with just a handful of hobby farmers. By purchasing local flowers, we keep funds within the Territory economy and reduce our reliance on interstate and overseas suppliers.
